Homeowners are being urged to think twice before buying garden lights this year as cheap imports and misleading labels leave many homes at risk of electrical faults and fire hazards.

Experts at Lighting Legends are reminding households that while outdoor lights can totally transform a garden, they can also create serious safety issues if the wrong products are installed. Low-cost solar stakes, festoon lights and wall-mounted lanterns have surged in popularity in recent years – but the experts say not all products on the market are built to withstand the UK’s unpredictable weather including heavy rain and sudden frosts. Electrical faults outdoors are particularly dangerous as water ingress, exposed wiring and poor insulation can all increase the risk of short circuits and even house fires if connected to mains power.

So the experts are warning homeowners to check key details before clicking ‘add to basket’ – especially when buying online.
Shoppers are also advised to inspect lights regularly once installed. Cracked casings or flickering bulbs can all be signs that a product isn’t coping with the elements.

Jon Saeed, managing director at Lighting Legends, commented: “Garden lighting should enhance your outdoor space – not create a safety risk! We’re seeing more decorative options than ever before, but shoppers need to prioritise build quality and weather protection. Always check the IP rating and buy from trusted retailers. Outdoor electrics are exposed to far harsher conditions than indoor lighting, so cutting corners simply isn’t worth it.”

Five things to look out for when buying garden lights this spring:

Check the IP rating
Many outdoor lights have an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of IP44 which means they are suitable for general outdoor use. When purchasing garden lights, ideally you should be looking for ratings of IP65 or higher if you want lights that are weatherproof and can withstand rain.

Look for proper UK certification
Ensure the product carries a legitimate UKCA or CE marking and is sold by a reputable retailer. Those without a proper certification should not be on the market at all and can pose safety risks. If uncertified electrical equipment causes a fire for example, insurers can refuse or reduce a claim.

Be wary of ultra-cheap imports
If the price looks too good to be true, it often is. Poor quality wiring and weak waterproof seals are common issues. Ultra-cheap imports also increases your risk of purchasing something without the proper UK certification.

Check cable length and outdoor suitability
If cables aren’t long enough it causes a pull on the wires and internal conductors, this can slowly damage your lights over time and reduce their life. If you decide to use extension leads and connectors make sure they are also rated for outdoor use.

Think about longevity
The quality of your lights will determine how long they last. If you’re looking for a cheaper option then solar lights can be a good choice. Opt for solar lights that are high quality and durable as poor battery quality means some may fail after just one season.
