Labour’s lead candidate for the Sir Gaerfyrddin Senedd election has called for a fair deal for Carmarthenshire’s children, criticising the Plaid Cymru led Carmarthenshire County Council’s lack of investment in schools in Llanelli, and proposals to shut a nursery school in Ammanford.

Calum Higgins, who is currently Deputy Mayor of Ammanford, has pledged to hold the Plaid Cymru Council accountable, and push for a fairer deal for children and their parents in Carmarthenshire:

Calum said:

” It’s really noticeable in Carmarthenshire that our schools investment programme has stalled.  I attended school in Carmarthenshire myself, under the previous UK and Welsh  Labour governments.  I went to Primary school in Saron, and then Maes Yr Yrfa (now Maes y Gwendraeth), where lessons were being delivered in portacabins in the early 2000s.  In my time, the schools investment programme changed both schools beyond recognition.  Since 2014, the Welsh Labour Government has invested a further £106.9 million into Carmarthenshire school buildings, transforming ageing schools across the County.

However, it’s clear to parents in areas like Ammanford and Llanelli that the drive to fix our schools has been stalled by Plaid Cymru. Plans for schools in Ammanford, together with Ysgol Heol Goffa and Ysgol Dewi Sant in Llanelli, seem no further along than 5 years ago. This is unfair on children who are being taught in ageing buildings.

There is also a proposal to shut Ammanford nursery school, which has worried parents who are concerned about nursery capacity in the Amman Valley, which is already at capacity.

If elected I will hold the County Council to account from the Senedd, pushing for a fairer deal for Carmarthenshire’s children across the County, and calling on Plaid Cymru to hold public meetings with parents in these areas about the progress they have or haven’t made.”
