After more than 750 days with the charity, Pepsi the Crossbreed is still searching for the ‘paw-fect’ home. To help find dogs like Pepsi find their home, Dogs Trust Cardiff is educating the public on the benefits of training dogs to wear muzzles. There is a common misconception that muzzled dogs are aggressive or challenging, which is not always the case.
Looking for a best friend? Then look no further! Dogs Trust Cardiff is hoping to find Pepsi, a five-year-old Crossbreed who has spent over 750 days in the charity’s care, her ‘paw-fect’ home, by asking ‘are you a dog person?’
Pepsi is a bright, affectionate dog who loves exploring new places and learning new things. She enjoys her walks, loves playing with toys, and is happiest when spending time with people she trusts. Pepsi is looking for a calm, adult-only home where she can be the only pet, giving her the chance to relax, settle in at her own pace and let her playful personality shine through. Like many dogs, Pepsi wears a muzzle when on her walks because she feels nervous around other dogs. Having made wonderful progress with her training, Dogs Trust Cardiff hopes that Pepsi’s story will help people understand that muzzle training is often misunderstood, and it is a normal part of responsible dog ownership, rather than something to be worried about.
Kim Davies, Manager of Dogs Trust Cardiff, said: “Dogs like Pepsi can wear muzzles for a variety of reasons, like preventing them from eating things that could be harmful or if they have a prey drive. A muzzle doesn’t just mean they’re reactive, despite what some people might think. It can be useful for all dogs to be comfortable wearing a muzzle, as you never know when it might come in handy. Dogs can learn to happily wear a muzzle in the same way that they learn to wear a collar. They can still enjoy their walks, pant freely, drink water and have treats. Are you a dog person? If you’re ready to welcome a dog into your home, we’re here to help! We currently have lots of dogs in our care, who are ready to meet someone like you and find their ‘paw-fect’ home!”
Sadly, dogs that wear muzzles can often take longer to find homes. Dogs Trust Cardiff hopes to change this by helping potential adopters understand why muzzle training is helpful and how it helps keep dogs safe. Reasons a dog may wear a muzzle include:
- To ensure safety when a dog is frightened, unwell, or in pain. Fear and discomfort can affect a dog’s behaviour, and a muzzle allows a vet or owner to provide treatment quickly and safely in an emergency.
- To prevent dogs from eating things that could be harmful. Some dogs have strict dietary requirements, while others are prone to picking up and swallowing things they shouldn’t. A muzzle can be an essential tool to help keep them safe.
- To support responsible ownership and ensure the safety of dogs and those around them. Some dogs may have a high prey drive, a history of chasing, or may become overwhelmed in certain situations. A muzzle allows them to enjoy walks and interactions safely.
By promoting muzzle training as responsible, Dogs Trust Cardiff hopes more dogs like Pepsi will find loving homes.
