In just two days, the UK’s best BMX racers will arrive in Cardiff for one of the biggest weekends in the British BMX calendar as the Lloyds National BMX Race Series arrives in Wales for Rounds 7 and 8, alongside the prestigious British Cycling National BMX Championships.
From 3–5 July, the National BMX Centre Wales in Rumney will welcome around 1,000 riders from across Great Britain, making this one of the largest BMX events of the year. It also marks a significant milestone for cycling in Wales, with the first British BMX National event to be staged in Wales for almost two decades. For Welsh riders, clubs and supporters, it promises to be a weekend to remember.
A Landmark Weekend for Welsh BMX
Hosted by Cardiff BMX Racing Club, this landmark event celebrates the continued growth of BMX racing in Wales. Riders from all three Welsh BMX clubs—Cardiff BMX Club, Llynfi BMX Club and Dragon Riders BMX Club—will line up alongside the nation’s best, showcasing Welsh talent on home soil.
The return of a National Series event to Wales for the first time in nearly two decades highlights the country’s world-class facilities and thriving BMX community. Spectators can look forward to an action-packed weekend of close racing and an electric atmosphere as the UK’s top riders compete for National Championship titles and valuable National Series points.
Hugh Copping, Chairman of Cardiff BMX Club, welcomed the event, saying:
“Since the opening of the track, the club has gone from strength to strength and we have ambitious plans for the future. Welsh BMX clubs will have approximately 40 riders competing on Welsh soil, an unprecedented number that highlights the sports remarkable growth in recent years.
“We are fortunate to have a world class facility here in Wales, and we are committed to promoting it both nationally and internationally. This event provides the first real opportunity to showcase what can be achieved here in Wales and to demonstrate the quality of the venue, the strength of our BMX community and the exciting future of the sport.”
The Battle for the National Champion’s Jersey
On Friday 3 July, running from 6pm–8pm, the British Cycling National BMX Championships take centre stage. The championships are a standalone, winner-takes-all event where the country’s elite BMX athletes compete for the coveted title of National Champion. Around 80 of Britain’s top riders across the Elite, Under-23 and Junior categories will line up on the gate, launching from the impressive 8-metre start hill in pursuit of championship glory.
Unlike the National Series, the National Championships are decided in a single event. The reward is more than just a title. National Champions earn the right to wear the iconic National Champion’s jersey—or official champion’s sleeve stripes—in competition for the following year, making Friday night’s racing one of the most anticipated events of the BMX calendar.
National Series Action Continues Across the Weekend
Following Friday’s Championship racing, attention turns to the Lloyds National BMX Race Series, with valuable championship points up for grabs across Saturday and Sunday.
The Cardiff rounds represent Rounds 7 and 8 of the 2026 series, following visits to Manchester, Glasgow and Gosport earlier in the season. As riders approach the business end of the National Series, every gate drop becomes increasingly important in the race for overall standings.
Racing schedule:
Friday 3 July: 7pm–9pm – British Cycling National BMX Championships
Saturday 4 July: 11am–6:45pm – Lloyds National BMX Race Series Round 7
Sunday 5 July: 10am–5:45pm – Lloyds National BMX Race Series Round 8
