Top of Pops Eco Style!

An eco-friendly Llanelli school has come up with a novel way of building its own greenhouse – by using old plastic pop bottles!

Stebonheath Primary School has taken recycling to a new level and created a greenhouse made entirely from two-litre plastic bottles.

Families of pupils collected the bottles – 1600 in total, and it took 70 hours to build. Headteacher Julian Littler said: “We will be using it to seed flowering plants for our flowerbeds and pots and seeds for our vegetable garden such as carrots, sprouts, courgettes and broccoli.

The school’s Eco Committee then sell the flowers and vegetables to parents when they are ready.” Stebonheath School has already achieved the Green Flag under the Eco Schools programme and is now working towards its second Green Flag. Eco Schools is an international award delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy and the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Pupils study topics including waste, litter, energy, water, transport, healthy living and global citizenship.
