Liz Saville Roberts challenges the PM on his track record of appointments amid Mandelson saga

Today (Monday 20 April) the Prime Minister gave a statement in the House of Commons on the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the Ambassador to the US, despite the fact that he was denied clearance by the United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV).

The government has said that Sir Keir Starmer, or any other Ministers, did not know Lord Mandelson failed security vetting until earlier this week

Plaid Cymru Westminster Leader, Liz Saville Roberts MP has said that the Prime Minister has a “track record of appointing Labour’s most favoured sons and daughters to top government jobs and into the House of Lords.” citing the PM’s backing of Vaughan Gething as an example of Labour’s “crony culture” in Wales.

Ms Saville Roberts asked how the Prime Minister will explain to his party the role he has played in bringing down Labour’s century of dominance in Wales in the forthcoming Senedd elections. Labour are expected to lose control of the Welsh Government, with Plaid Cymru or Reform being in line to replace them in power.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Liz Saville Roberts MP said:

“The Prime Minister is hiding behind a thicket of legalese and procedure, but he has a track record of appointing Labour’s most favoured sons and daughters to plum government jobs and into the House of Lords.

“In Wales, we know all about Labour’s crony culture. Who could forget UK Labour’s favourite First Minister, Vaughan Gething, propped up by No 10 in spite of dodgy donations and now tipped for a peerage?

“But the timing, Mr Speaker. How will he explain to his party his role in bringing down Labour’s century of dominance in Wales in the forthcoming elections?”

The Prime Minister dismissed Ms Saville Roberts’ question and said that today he was addressing the process in relation to Peter Mandelson in which he had already answered a number of questions.
