RESPONDING TO TODAY’S WELSH BUDGET, GMB WALES WAS PLEASED TO SEE
INVESTMENT IN VITAL PUBLIC SERVICES FROM THE WELSH GOVERNMENT.

However the union wants to see immediate action from the UK
government to lift the public pay cap, and provide Welsh public sector
workers with a much deserved pay rise.

JOHN PHILLIPS, GMB WALES SECRETARY, SAID:

“We broadly welcome today’s commitment from the Welsh Government to
invest in local services and provide an extra 450million to safeguard
the Welsh NHS.

“Over the last few months we’ve been working hard as a union to bring
an end to the public sector pay pinch and we accept that the only way
the Welsh Government can do this without placing irreversible harm on
Welsh public services is to receive a bigger block grant from
Westminster.

“If the Tories can find an extra 1.5bn to keep themselves in power,
why can’t they find the money to give hard pressed public sector
workers a pay rise?

“We’re hoping in the next few weeks to see more councils committing
to back our pay pinch campaign [1] and help put pressure on the Tories
in Westminster to lift the cap.

“I urge all those councils that haven’t done so to back our campaign
immediately.”
