Cardiff man charged for explosives offences

Wales Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit (WECTU) assisted by South Wales Police have been investigating reports of explosive materials being held at an address in Ely, Cardiff.

27-year-old Edward John Harris has been charged with the following offences:

  • Four offences of making or possessing an explosive substance with intent  to endanger life or cause serious injury to property, Contrary to Section 4 of the Explosives Act 1883.
  • Four offences of possession of a document containing information useful to terrorism contrary to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

A second suspect remains in police custody for questioning.

Harris, from Archer Crescent, Ely will appear before Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday September 1st.

Detective Superintendent Jim Hall, Head of WECTU  said: “Our investigation continues but we must stress that there is no evidence to suggest any specific terrorist threat against Cardiff or that people in Cardiff are at any greater risk, however we would remind people to remain vigilant and report any suspicions to the police.”
