Council sustainability team in Wales Green List 2010

THE council’s sustainability team has been recognised for their extraordinary efforts to be ‘green’.

The team – which includes Kendal Davies, Eurgain Powell, Neil Evans, Diane Thomas, Tina Brice, Sharon Griffiths, Guto Owen and Rhian Owen – have been named in the Wales Green List 2010.

The list includes 52 people from across Wales who’ve been tackling a range of sustainability issues.

Other representatives from Carmarthenshire that have also received recognition include Fay Sharply from Brechfa, Gideon Carpenter from Llanfallteg, Jan Cliff from Capel Hendre and Mike and Lucy Evans from Ferryside.

The list was revealed at a packed hall in the Llangollen Pavilion where heroes from 2009, including Environment Minister Jane Davidson AM, shared their experiences before passing the baton onto the named champions for this year.

Ms Davidson said: “The Green List is all about recognising the people who are leading the way on sustainable development and inspiring others to do the same.
“This might involve developing a community initiative, pushing for sustainable change within the workplace or simply living as sustainably as possible.
“The people recognised on the Green List are living proof that one person really can make a difference. They are providing real and tangible examples of how we can all live much more sustainable lives and I congratulate all 52 on their success.”

The council’s sustainability team have been praised for their commitment and enthusiasm in helping to establish Carmarthenshire as one of the leading local authorities in Wales for sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.

Executive board member for sustainability Councillor Pam Palmer said: “I would like to congratulate all those from Carmarthenshire that have been recognised in the Wales Green List for their outstanding commitment in helping to make our county more sustainable.

“I would also encourage other individuals and groups in the county to join in by signing-up to the Carmarthenshire Community Challenge and develop local community projects to support a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle.”

The Carmarthenshire Community Challenge is about showing what communities can do to reduce their carbon footprint through saving resources, saving energy, travelling wisely, shopping locally and improving the local environment.

Support will be offered by the council and partner organisations to help communities develop their ideas. For more information or to register interest call 01267 224902 or email ehpowell@carmarthenshire.gov.uk
