A MAN has been fined £75 after failing to clean up his dog’s mess in Felinfoel.
Council environmental enforcement officers were on patrol when they witnessed the incident on the grassed area known as Y Felin.
Failure to pay the fixed penalty notice could result in prosecution in the magistrates court and a maximum fine of £1,000.
Executive Board Member for Environmental and Public Protection Cllr Jim Jones said dog fouling, along with litter, was a top priority for the council.
“This is a major concern for residents and rightly so, dog mess left anywhere can be a serious health risk; not to mention the smell and mess it causes, particularly of you accidentally step in it.
“The majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their pets, but there is a minority who do not listen. This will not be tolerated and those who break the law in this way will be punished for their actions.
“Hopefully by fining people, it will help to get this message across and we can enjoy a cleaner and safer Carmarthenshire.
Residents are being urged to help the council catch offenders by reporting dog fouling incidents in their area under the ‘Dog Watch’ scheme.
Cllr Jones added: “Our enforcement officers have to cover the whole county and they cannot be everywhere at once, which is why the help of the public is vital.
“If the message gets out that the residents can take direct action to report offences, dog owners are far more likely to behave responsibly.”
