Response statements issued by South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner, Alun Michael and South Wales Police lead on Hate Crime Superintendent Lian Bartlett:

Superintendent Liane Bartlett of South Wales Police said: “We have not seen an increase in hate crime incidents reported to us in the two weeks. However, that is not to say that abuse of this nature is not taking place. We urge anyone who has been subjected to any behaviour of this type to contact us on 101.
“South Wales has a long and proud tradition of strong, diverse communities and we will not tolerate any criminal actions that undermine this.
“All forms of hate crime are totally unacceptable in any circumstances and any victim can have confidence in reporting incidents to us so they can be fully investigated and robust action taken against those responsible.”
South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Alun Michael said: “Wales has a proud tradition of welcoming people from around the world and it is our diversity that makes us stronger. We are grateful to all those who choose this small nation to work and live.
“Whether it is in the street, the workplace or online, those who seek to promote hatred and violence, whether based on race, religion, political affiliation, gender or sexuality, have no place in Wales or in Britain.
“South Wales Police aims to be the best at understanding the needs of its communities and wants to hear about people’s current experiences – for example the Police Commissioner and the Muslim Council of Wales, have worked out a new way for people to tell the police about incidents or experiences informally.
“We urge anyone who believes they have been the victim of any hate crime, or has any fears about the safety of themselves or their community to contact South Wales Police on 101 non-emergency number or 999 in an emergency.”
