An event was held on Saturday 1 October in Cardigan to share experiences from existing dementia friendly communities with the public, organisations and businesses in Ceredigion, to help them make Ceredigion communities more dementia friendly

The event was held as part of International Day of Older Persons by Ceredigion County Council, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales’ Office and the Alzheimer’s Society. The event was supported by Cynnal y Cardi under the LEADER Scheme through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014 – 2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

The day was aimed at people with an interest in helping to make the area they live or work a more supportive environment for people living with dementia, and their carers.

Councillor Catherine Hughes, Cabinet Member for Care, Assurance and Housing Services, said: “I am delighted that this event is being held in Ceredigion. Becoming a dementia supportive community can have a huge positive impact on the quality of life for those living with dementia as well as their family and friends.

She adds: “With the cases of dementia increasing in Wales, we can all be affected in some way be it a family member, friend or ourselves, so increasing the number of dementia supportive communities in Ceredigion will be a great comfort to many residents in our county.”
