Dear Editor
Cop28 Fiasco
Our Prime Minister is obviously a very great fan of Lewis Carroll and he must delight in the thought that Cop28 is the 21st century equivalent of the ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’. To be sure, Rishi Sunak appears absolutely delighted that the UK’s contribution (1%) of global emissions is down 40% since 1990, while China (the world’s worst polluter) has risen 300% – perhaps the PM’s skills do not encompass the meaning of percentages – he then adequately demonstrates the extent of his other cerebral skills by announcing a new deal between the UAE state-owned renewables company, Masder, and the German energy company RWE. This joint adventure is to invest in the UK’s £11billion wind farm at Dogger Bank – the biggest in the world – which he claims could help to power 3 million homes, although he conveniently neglects to say that without the ‘right wind’ they will power ZILCH homes! But then in the spirit of the ‘Mad Hatter’ the PM announces a whopping £3billion for international climate finance, including halting deforestation and the acceleration of renewable energy. Meanwhile China and India are building lots and lots of dirty coal-fired power stations – you just cannot make it up – and there is little truth in the rumour attributed to foreign coal industries that Rishi Sunak is known as ‘Humpty Dumpty’ who famously said, “When I use a word it means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.”
