Trends come and go, and our homes are subject to changing styles and interior design movements. We’ve seen the varying preferences between minimalism and maximalism, the boom in Scandinavian styles, and the rise of Art Deco designs, amongst hundreds of other trends throughout the years.

It is undeniable that interior design has been evolving for decades, and popular styles still tend to switch in and out, make a return years later, and continue to develop.

So far in 2024, maximalism has been “in”, coming back into fashion with the current popularity of chunky and playful interior accents, and ‘over-the-top’ styles.

From embracing earthy tones to bright colours like peach and green, one thing that also remains popular is the use of colour throughout your home.

Another emerging trend, which has been particularly popular on TikTok with home renovations and DIY projects, are statement bathroom tiles – especially in glazed, glossy green.

There is much more yet to come in 2024, and here senior interior designer at luxury homeware retailer Madison & Mayfair, Kate Conrad, shares the trends that she predicts will be continuing to emerge in the latter half of this year.

Quiet luxury

“An emerging trend throughout this year has been that of quiet luxury”, says Kate. “This involves crafting a home interior that puts an emphasis on quality investment pieces that you can build a room around.

“It centres around creating a home that enjoys luxury, without the items having to be ‘loud’ – because a more understated interior style can often create a more sophisticated, timeless decor.

“With high-quality textures and lavish furniture in more minimalist styles, obtaining the ‘less is more’ look can achieve a greater outcome, which many are favouring in 2024”.

Stripes

“Stripes are in this year”, states Kate. “They can provide both a traditional and a modern feel, perfect for homes that enjoy combining aesthetics.

“Whether you create a room that is full of stripes, with statement pieces and features, or you add subtle ornaments with stripes to achieve a more reserved style, it will look current and well-thought out.

“I find that striped items look perfect in a bathroom, adding a slight nautical theme to the room. Perhaps some subtle additions like a striped soap dispenser with matching accessories would provide that contemporary tone”.

Mixing textures

“Achieving a contemporary home is driven by texture in 2024”, Kate shares. “Particularly, layering textures.

“We are a lot more confident with being bold in our interior design choices now, and pairing different textures can produce a home decor style that favours luxury and richness within the finer details.

“Explore velvets and corduroys and silks, and your home will have a contemporary edge in line with the trends of 2024”.

Bold lighting

“A trend which I think will continue to take off in the next half of this year is bold lighting”, says Kate. “It acts as a prominent statement piece in any room, offering a sense of grandeur.

“Sculptural lighting has really dominated 2024, and with more and more people jumping on the trend, I think it will continue to appear in different homes that prefer a decor style that embraces unique features – such as bold lighting”.

Return of maximalism

“This year, embracing decor with vibrant and daring designs has become an extremely popular style, with maximalism at its heart”, says Kate.

“With bold colours, clashing patterns, and unique, eccentric ornaments and furniture, a home that has a playful tone has become favoured by many.

“As so many of us now look to achieve an aesthetic, trendy interior, I think 2024 will continue to explore different maximalist styles and designs to make our homes feel like confident spaces of expression”.
