Cllr Handel Davies elected as new County Council Chair

Cllr Handel Davies, member for the Llandovery Ward, has taken the chain of office today, 22 May 2024.

Taking the chair, Cllr Davies paid tribute to the outgoing Chair, Cllr Louvain Roberts and thanked her for her service to the Council.

Cllr Davies will chair the Council for the next 12 months, with his wife, Margaret, as his Consort, and Cllr Dot Jones, member for Llannon, as his Vice-Chair.

Cllr Davies has chosen LATCH Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity and Prostrate Cymru as his charities during his term of office.

The Chair is the first citizen of Carmarthenshire County Council and is elected at the Annual General Meeting.

Duties include chairing full meetings of the Council, representing the Council at formal and ceremonial occasions, welcoming visitors to the County, and attending and supporting events organised by local people and organisations.

Cllr Davies has been a County Councillor since May 2017 and is a member of Llandovery Town Council, having served as Mayor in 2021/22 and 2022/23.  He has also been a member of Llanfairarybryn Community Council since 2017.

He represents the County Council in the Llandovery Ward, is a member of the Council’s Communities, Homes and Regeneration Scrutiny Committee, sits on the Governing Body of Ysgol Rhys Prichard and represents the Council on The Dorothy May Edwards Charity (Ysgol Pantycelyn area), The Mary Elizabeth Morris Charity, Ysgol Pantycelyn, Llandovery,

The Cambrian Mountains Initiative Partnership Board, and the Heart of Wales Line Forum.

Cllr Davies has retired from his former employment as Department Head of Building Control with Carmarthenshire County Council but keeps himself busy with many interests. These include being President and Life Member of Llandovery RFC, Member of Friends of Llandovery Hospital, Chair of Cylch Cinio Cymraeg Llanymddyfri, Trustee of Llandovery Museum, Trustee and Vice Chair of Ysgol Feithrin Tre Ficer, Llandovery, Vice Chair of Côr Meibion Llanymddyfri, Captain of Llandovery Golf Club.
