A recent major product recall has been issued by Tesco for its aubergine katsu bao buns across the UK due to a labelling mishap involving undeclared milk and the wrongful use of a vegan label, raising safety concerns for allergy-sensitive consumers and vegans.
Leading online training provider High Speed Training warns consumers to always exercise caution when it comes to food labels, especially when it comes to food allergies or intolerances.
For the millions of people in the UK managing food allergies1, a simple labelling error can be life-threatening. The UK’s food safety laws, including Natasha’s Law, require businesses to accurately list all ingredients, with the 14 major allergens clearly highlighted.
Dr. Richard Anderson, Head of Learning & Development at High Speed Training, said:
“When you buy a product labelled ‘Vegan’ or ‘Dairy-Free,’ you should be able to eat it with complete confidence.
“This recall shows that businesses must be held accountable for absolute accuracy. Consumers must know that an error could be deadly, which is why your vigilance is so important.”
Natasha’s Law (which came into force in October 2021) means food prepared and pre-packed for direct sale (like a sandwich from a coffee shop) must now display a full ingredients list, with allergens emphasised. This law was introduced to protect consumers and give you the full, transparent information you need to stay safe.
What to do when a product is recalled
If you have purchased a product that is subject to a recall, like the Tesco Bao Buns, your immediate action is crucial.
Dr Anderson continues: “Product recalls are generally issued as a precautionary measure, and are mainly for the notice of the retailers themselves, who will be required to remove the products in question from sale as quickly as possible.
“However, knowledge of product recalls is beneficial for the public for two reasons. Firstly, if they haven’t yet eaten the product in question, they can dispose of the product safely. And secondly, if they have already eaten the product, they can monitor for potential signs and symptoms of food poisoning.”For more tips and in-depth guidance, visit High Speed Training Hub, or our article: Why is Food Labelling Important?
