From childhood best friends and close family to workmates and distant cousins, every wedding invitation comes with a different relationship to celebrate.
Now, new research from One4all Gift Cards has revealed that how well guests know the happy couple is the biggest factor that could shape their wedding gift, with half of people in Wales (50%) saying they would be more likely to spend less if they were not particularly close to the couple.
This placed the relationship ahead of significant travel or accommodation costs (34%), and paying for a hen or stag do (24%) as reasons for impacting the gifting cost.
While these factors influence many guests, 19% say none of the circumstances listed would change what they spend on the wedding gift, suggesting some still set their budget around the occasion itself.
The findings also reveal what guests believe is an acceptable amount to give those closest to them. On average, guests in Wales consider an estimated £74 per person appropriate for a wedding gift for close friends or family.
Up to £50 was the most commonly selected amount, chosen by 41% of respondents, while two in five (40%) believe spending between £50 and £100 is acceptable. A further 14% selected between £101 and £200, while just 5% chose more than £200.
The wider celebration can also affect what guests feel able to give. Almost half of respondents (46%) said the overall cost of attending a wedding would lead them to spend less on the present, with 29% saying they would spend a little less and 17% saying they would reduce their gift noticeably.
