With bonfire night coming up on Thursday 5th of November, we posed the question to our readers across our news pages, West Wales Chronicle, South Wales Chronicle, Llanelli Standard, Swansea Standard and Caru SirGar should fireworks be banned from shops and just left to professional displays.
The question has seen an overwhelming response within the comments, with a majority agreeing that fireworks should be left to the professionals or organised displays.
The minority that were in favour for keeping them sold at shops said comments including the following, “it’s traditional, love to see them on bonfire night, also New Years, weddings and birthdays.” There was also those that said they should just be limit what you can buy but sell them just for bonfire night only and not any other occasions.
Those in favour of the ban of sales have said they support seeing them at organised displays, there is also the case that fireworks should be silent rather than the ones with loud explosions, as the noise of the explosions can affect animals, but it also has an affect on those soldiers who suffer with PTSD as the noise triggers those with memories of being on the frontline.
Why do we have Bonfire night, or as it is also known Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes was arrested on November 5th 1605 for the gunpowder plot while he was guarding explosives that the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. The plotters had intended to assassinate King James I and his parliament. Celebrating that the king had survived, people lit bonfires around London.
Big name shops that have banned the sale of fireworks include the Co-op who has stopped selling fireworks being the first supermarket to do so, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose both stopped selling fireworks in 2019, with Sainsbury’s saying one reason was the harmful effects it has on pets, the most recent supermarket to do to do so was M&S.
