Local Doctor Who fans were yet again thrilled to find their favourite TV show back in Llanelli, filming scenes for the upcoming series 8. Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman reprise their roles as The Doctor and his time travelling companion Clara, filming an episode in Llanelli’s Box Cemetery last week.
We were lucky enough to get an interview with the cemetery manager, Graham Williams, who tells us his story of what it’s like having such an iconic show here in Llanelli.
1) How has it been for you to experience one of the most popular TV shows in the world filming in the cemetery?
It’s always nice to have something different going on in your workplace, especially if it’s something positive. We are always happy to accommodate film/tv crews here, it helps raise the profile of the cemetery grounds locally and promotes the town and surrounding areas worldwide.
2) Since Doctor Who filmed another episode back there in 2012, have you had any visitors to the area that have come just to seek out the locations that are in their favourite TV show?
Can’t say we’ve experienced people visiting here specifically as a result of the previous filming, however visitors very often mention it.
3) Have you met any of the cast?
Yes – they are all very pleasant.
4) What is it about the location that you think attracted the BBC location scouts?
A Victorian burial ground that has lots of memorials intact and in good repair is relatively rare. The area is also safe to move around and relatively easy to accommodate all the equipment needed when filming.
The location is also suitable because they can film without having to deal with modern building etc.
5) How excited are you to see Box Cemetery on screen WORLDWIDE once again?
Always pleased to be able to assist in promoting the cemetery and the town.
Doctor Who wrapped up filming in the cemetery on Friday 4th July, and the new series will begin this August on BBC One. Thank you to Graham for being willing to answer our questions.
