Valley Cougars remain top of the Premier League after a dominating 48-20win over Bridgend Blue Bulls at Pyle RFC.

The visitors were soon 10-0 up after tries from Dean “Maggot” Higgs and Ethan Coombes, Mike Hurley converting the first.

Bridgend hit back through Jack Dryden’s first try of the day that Gareth Howells converted to bring the score back to 10-6, but the Cougars then built up a 30-point lead.

Dan Davies was next over, followed by Liam Davies, Anthony Noonan, Dafydd Hellard and another from Davies, with Hurley’s three goals bringing the score up to 36-6.

Ray Evans went over in the corner for Bridgend to bring the score back to 36-10 before Cougars addressed the balance through Rhys Davies that Hurley converted. The next Cougars’ try, from Ryan Davies, converted by Hurley then brought the score up to 48-10.

Ryan Davies was sinbinned not long after scoring and Bridgend took advantage of the extra man as Dryden went over for two further tries to complete his hat-trick, Howell converting the first of them.

KEIGHLEY COWLING HARLEQUINS 16 SOUTH WALES IRONMEN U17 22

South Wales Ironmen’s under 17 side won their first game of asking, beating an open-age side from Keighley, Cowling Harlequins, 22-16.

The Ironmen were due to play Keighley Albion under 17s, a club directly linked to Keighley Cougars, who themselves don’t run junior sides.

But Keighley were unable to field a side so Cowling, who play in the Pennine League in Yorkshire, stepped in, and were shocked by the South Wales youngsters who were 22-0 up in as many minutes.

Derryn Hewings scored the opening try on eight minutes with James Bartlett converting before James Wickham weaved through for the second, this one going unconverted.

Straight away it was 16-0, Owain Harvey went over under the sticks with Bartlett converting and again from kick-off, Taine Hendy went the length of the field to score with Bartlett again kicking the goal.

The roles were reversed in the second half but the Welsh lads held on. Craig Nicholson put Cowling on the board in the second minute of the second 30-minute half and Darren Greenwood converted.

Dwaine Smith powered over from close range ten minutes later with Greenwood again adding the extras and Nicholson got his second, unconverted, with two minutes to go.

South Wales Ironmen’s reserves were beaten 56-8 by a strong Keighley Cougars second string.

It took the hosts just two minutes to get on the board, Aidan Scully scoring in the corner.

A Yousif Sulliman try levelled things for the Ironmen with Huw Parks slicing the kick wide.

But Keighley soon went into a 16-4 lead. First Luke Walters dived in underneath the uprights, then an Adam Brook chip was touched down by Ash Hutchinson. Callum Smithson converted both.

Keighley make an error from the restart and Lee Goddard got another try back. Fraser Stroud missed the kick and the score was left on 16-8.

Walters’ second try, converted by Smithson, made the score 22-8 at half-time and after the interval, Keighley took full control, scoring six tries without reply.

Jack Brown was over first, Scully got his second, then there were tries for Josh Casey, Ryan Price, Calvin Barker, before Scully got his hat-trick on 63 minutes, the Ironmen keeping them out for the final 17 minutes of the game. Smithson converted five out of the six.
