Atriwm, (pronounced Ah-tree-oom), has been chosen as the name for the brand-new health and wellbeing centre in Carmarthen, which is due to open its doors in early 2027.

Carmarthenshire County Council is transforming a former major retail store (Debenhams) in the St Catherine’s area of Carmarthen town into a one-of-a-kind facility that will deliver a range of community services in one central location.

With significant funding by both UK and Welsh Governments, this major refurbishment project, will be a home to a Council run Sport and Leisure facility, a Customer Services Hwb and a visitor information outlet. Hywel Dda University Health Board will also locate a number of its services at Atriwm and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David will offer its sport and exercise therapy clinics from the modern facility.

Actif, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Sport and Leisure service will offer its first 24-hour gym at Atriwm, along with a dedicated state of art spin and activity studios, indoor adventure golf, children’s play centre, Electric Go Karting, multi-zone TAG Active gamified arena and party rooms. The Council’s Carmarthen Customer Service Hwb will relocate to Atriwm, providing help, advice and support across wide range of Council services and other agencies. A visitor information outlet supporting local and County tourism will also call Atriwm its home.

Hywel Dda University Health Board services will include community and children’s nursing teams, children and young people’s therapies, as well as dental, sexual health, phlebotomy, podiatry and mental health services. It will create a modern, accessible environment for health care in the centre of the local community.

The Atriwm building will also be home to the Hywel Dda People Development team, providing a modern learning and training environment for Health Board staff.

UWTSD students of the bilingual BSc Sport and Exercise Therapy course will provide  injury and soft tissue massage clinics under the supervision of the academic team.  The BSc Sport and Exercise Therapy programme is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists and focusses on preparing students to work in the aspect of healthcare specifically concerned with injury prevention and patient rehabilitation.  The degree is also endorsed by the Chartered Association for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA)which means that it is aligned with industry standards for job roles such as gym instructor and personal training meaning students are well qualified for the workplace. Clients will also benefit from close proximity of the Actif gym and the range of health services to complement the treatment provided.

The name ‘Atriwm’ is inspired in recognition of Carmarthen’s Roman roots, with its fort and amphitheatre. Atriwm, a Welsh word, derives from the Latin word, Atrium, meaning an entrance hall or the main open court of a Roman house.

Atriwm is also the name for one of the two upper chambers of the human heart, a name that is appropriate to all partners involved in the project and the health and well-being purpose of the building.

In the context of modern architecture, Atriwm pays tribute to the iconic large glass windows of the former retail building.

With an original completion date of early 2026, Atriwm is now expected to open in early 2027 due to unforeseen remedial works to the façade of the building. Lead contractor Bouygues UK will shortly commence work on the façade of the building which will require a traffic management system in place on St Catherine’s Street, which is likely to be in place until Autumn 2026.

Local contractors including FP Hurley, Shufflebottom and Becker Sliding Partitions have played a key role in delivering the scheme, supported by a network of supply chains, creating real economic benefits for the local community.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism – Cllr Hazel Evans said:

We are pleased to announce that Atriwm will be the name of the health and wellbeing centre in Carmarthen, which pays tribute to the town’s historical past whilst also providing a strong and positive name to a building which will be occupied by multiple partners to provide community health services.

I would like to thank the local community and drivers for their patience in regards to the traffic management system that will shortly be in place as construction work now moves to the outside of the building. Further details on the progress of Atriwm will be updated throughout the year as we look forward to opening the facility in 2027.”

Lee Davies, Hywel Dda University Health Board’s Executive Director of Strategy and Planning, commented:

Atriwm represents an important step forward in how we deliver health care at the heart of our community. We look forward to moving into the new building and bringing together a broad range of health and wellbeing services in one accessible location. This integrated approach will make it easier for people to receive the support they need, enhance outcomes, and help our population lead healthier lives.”
Professor Gareth Davies, Dean of the Institute of Management and Health at UWTSD said: “The University is pleased to be able to work with our partners to provide integrated health, wellbeing and leisure services to the community in Carmarthen.

This initiative provides our Sport and Exercise Therapy students with valuable practical experience in a professional setting and clients will have the added benefit of the close proximity of complementary health and fitness services offered within the building.  Our presence in the Atriwm enriches the range of  Sport and Healthy Living courses offered at our Carmarthen campus and we look forward to working within this multi-agency building and the benefits that it will bring”.

  1. Lol waste of money……at the most useless part of town .25mil of our tax money on crap when there more pressing work needed like repairs on our roads ? Improvements to our bin collections? Helping our elderly with more homes and carers? Ccc is badly run ! To the point the could not organise a piss up in brewery……

  2. This had Primark written all over it,how did they get it so wrong. Think of all the new jobs and customers it would have brought in.

  3. Sarah Jones you know that you vote for someone every 4 years to represent you on the Council and that is how you have your say

  4. CCC have missed an opportunity here for Mark Andrews and family who have bought Parc Dewi Sant have already opened a health hub in carmarthen. It has a private health practice there IGP. The doctors surgery near the park wants to move there, physiotherapy and a gym are there plus plenty more health related businesses. It has plenty of parking and served by having a bus route through it.
The money for Debenhams has mainly come from Westminster and not CCC. Maybe some has come from the Senedd, and if so that just adds fuel to the fire on how they miss spend our money.

    • Jodie Tremellen if they could just bring in new shops they would have. The building has been empty for years. The shopping centre is owned by a global company that don’t care whether you have a shop. The Cojncil bought that building so they could put something else there because shopping online has meant that not enough people are using shops and so they are closing

  5. A white elephant of epic proportions,an indoor go cart track, yet another gym and of course a posh new home for the Council ‘HWB’so much for a well being centre? We the Council tax payers of Carmarthen already reeling from a record busting 9.2% Council tax rise will need hospital treatment as they are back with the begging bowl for yet another whopping increase. Why is the construction taking so long? Why has it doubled in price? Why have the Council been economical with the truth? There should be an Public Inquiry into the whole debacle and Plaid would be shouting from the rooftops for one had it been Labour responsible.

  6. We have the 3rd most expensive council tax in Wales! Now we know where these idiots are spending OUR money ! Never consulted where the money should be spent. Why should we pay another 6% to repair this when our roads are appalling!

  7. Why are Carmarthenshire County Council obsessed with providing gyms when the private sector is already extremely active in this area? It would be cheaper to provide vouchers to those who wish to use them.

  8. And they’re hiking council tax by 6.5% this year on top of the 8.9% from last year. Social care in the county is on it’s arse and they’re spending money on this rubbish.

  9. This project had a headline of Health and Wellbeing Hub. One would be forgiven for expecting healthcare, nursing, physiotherapy, dental practitioners, medical practitioners, optometrists and the like. But,what’s on offer is 24-hour gym at Atriwm, along with a dedicated state of art spin and activity studios, indoor adventure golf, children’s play centre,Electric Go Karting,multi-zone TAG Active gamified arena and party rooms. The Council’s Carmarthen Customer Service Hwb will relocate to Atriwm, providing help, advice and support across wide range of Council services and other agencies. The focus doesn’t currently seem to be on delivering health care to the community although some Health Board teams will be based there –but unclear what and how they might deliver.

    • My main gripe is the way this project has been managed from the start. Years overdue and millions over budget. All we have seen are a few sound bytes from a ‘cabinet member’(delusions of grandeur!). Who is responsible for the failings of the project? The budget had almost doubled before the discovery of the structural issues! Surely someone signed off the structural surveys etc. where is the accountability? We’re talking millions not peanuts!

    • Louise Birda large proportion of our population are pensioners and have medical needs despite having lived healthy lifestyles.

    • Sharon Hayes You’d prefer an empty building gradually decaying to a place providing neede services and boosting the local economy?

    • Andrea Jones yeah with a pool too small for competitions…no diving as its only 2 meters deep.no sauna no spa no hot tubs no slides. ..no promised disabled school..an empty hallway the size of an airport ..oh and an empty man made swamp ? Not bad for £218 million ??? Been better off with new heol goffa and a few hotels with pools

      • Peter Keys But the UK government has got for other things. The UK spends approximately £50,000,000,000 (50 billion) per annum from the public purse on the military. Hinkley Point power station:£43,000,000,00 (43 billion),HS2 –£32.7 billion.

      • It is the money we all pay in taxes;some is given back to Wales and Cardiff gives some to Carmarthen. The amount given to Wales is smaller than it should be as vast sums of money are wasted by the UK government. The money wasted during Covid, for another example,is mind-boggling. The system needs to change. The money needs to be spent wisely and control given to Wales.

      • Ann Elias Wel,mae gwell cyfleusterau i dimau nyrsio i blant,ar gyfer therapïau i blant a phobl ifainc,i wasanaethau deintyddol ac ati,yn swnio’n dda i mi. Mae prinder lle yng Nglangwili, heb os,heb sôn am brinder staff. Mae denu pobl i astudio yng Nghaerfyrddin yn hollbwysig i economi’r dref, felly mae’r hyn a gaiff ei gynnig yno gan y tîm academaidd i’w groesawu hefyd. Mae canolfan i ymwelwyr yn rhan o’r cynllun ac fe debygwn i y gallai Caerfyrddin ddenu llawer mwy o ymwelwyr pe bai’n cael ei marchnata yn iawn. Daw twrisitiaeth ag arian i siopau,i westyau ac i lety arall yn y dre ac mae’n rhan hanfodol o’r economi.

      • Rhisiart Hincks you missed the point –the criticism is of the ineptitude and incompetence of the Plaid CCC. Where is the accountability regarding a project that has doubled in cost from an estimated £20m to over £40m whilst being in debt to the tune of £402m?

      • Peter Keys It is unfortunate but projects often run into difficulties. Another example if urban decay would have been the alternative.

  10. It won’t be open until at least 2027 due to incompetence –Are they spending another few million putting in a glass roof then?
