Learn practical ways to upgrade your pod system for better performance including tips on coils, tanks and gear without switching to a whole new setup.

Taking Your Pod System to the Next Level

Pod systems have evolved far beyond their early role as simple nicotine tools. While still ideal for beginners, many users eventually seek better flavour, vapour or control. The good news is you don’t need to switch to a complex box mod. With a few smart upgrades and a deeper understanding of your device, you can boost performance and satisfaction using the pod system you already have.

Switch to Refillable Pod Systems

If you started with prefilled or closed-system pods, one of the easiest and most impactful upgrades is moving to a refillable pod kit. Refillable devices offer far more flexibility when it comes to choosing e-liquids, allowing you to explore a wide variety of flavours, nicotine strengths and VG/PG ratios.

They also tend to be more cost-effective in the long run, especially for regular users. Instead of replacing the entire pod every time you run out, you simply refill the pod and swap out the coil when necessary. It’s a simple shift that opens the door to a more custom vaping experience.

Experiment With Different Coil Options

Many refillable pod systems support interchangeable coils, which is where upgrading really starts to get interesting. Coils vary in resistance and material, and each type offers a different style of vaping. For example, higher-resistance coils (above 1.0 ohm) are ideal for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping and are often used with higher-nicotine or nicotine salt e-liquids. They produce less vapour but offer a stronger throat hit.

On the other hand, lower-resistance coils (below 0.8 ohm) are designed for direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping, producing more vapour and generally working best with low-nicotine, high-VG liquids. If your pod system supports both, it’s worth trying each to see which suits your preferences best.

Some advanced coils also feature mesh designs, which improve flavour clarity and vapour production. While they may require slightly more power, they can significantly enhance your overall vape.

Use High-Quality E-Liquids

The type of e-liquid you use plays a major role in the performance of your device. Thicker, VG-heavy juices are better suited to sub-ohm coils and devices with stronger batteries. For pod systems, however, balanced 50/50 blends or higher PG formulas tend to work best unless your device is designed for DTL vaping.

Premium e-liquids with high-quality flavouring can also make a big difference. Once you’ve upgraded your coil and pod, pairing it with a more refined e-liquid can take your vaping session from average to exceptional.

Keep Your Device Clean and Well-Maintained

You can invest in the best coils and liquids available, but if your device isn’t properly maintained, you won’t get the results you’re hoping for. Regularly cleaning the pod, checking for condensation build-up, and replacing coils at the first sign of flavour loss can extend the life of your device and improve each puff.

It’s also worth investing in a few spare pods and rotating them. This prevents overuse and allows for easier flavour switching without cross-contamination.

Optimise Your Wattage and Airflow

Some pod systems come with adjustable wattage or airflow settings. If yours does, take the time to experiment with different combinations. Lower wattage generally works better with high-resistance coils and nicotine salts, while higher wattage can bring out the depth of flavour in freebase nicotine liquids.

Airflow also has a noticeable effect on your vaping experience. A tighter draw mimics traditional smoking and enhances throat hit, while a looser airflow increases vapour production and softens the sensation. Fine-tuning these settings can help you customise your device exactly to your liking.

Consider Battery Life and Charging Upgrades

As your pod system becomes more central to your daily routine, battery performance starts to matter more. Some higher-end pod devices come with larger built-in batteries or faster charging times. If your current device doesn’t last a full day on a single charge, it may be time to look for an upgrade within the same category.

Carrying a USB-C compatible charger or portable power bank can also make a big difference in convenience, especially if you’re often on the go.

Maximise Your Vape Without Switching Kits

You don’t need a bulky, high-wattage setup to enjoy a top-tier vaping experience. With the right coil, a refillable pod system, quality e-liquid and a little maintenance, your current device can offer many of the features found in more advanced kits without the steep learning curve.

Upgrading your pod system is ultimately about making thoughtful changes that suit your lifestyle and vaping goals. Whether it’s chasing better flavour, longer battery life or smoother draws, small adjustments can have a big impact when done right.
